Society

Joel is now an official member of the Chi Epsilon Honors Society of Civil Engineers. Last night he had his induction ceremony which sounded pretty interresting. Before they allowed the soon to be new members in they blind folded them and had them walk in a line into the room. Once everyone was in place they then remained blindfolded. You kind of wonder at this point what exactly they had planned but their reason for this was they would listen better to the rules etc. that was said if they stayed blindfolded. Once that was done they took the blindfolds off and proceeded to call their names and accept them into the society. The each got a certificate and a pretty pin that had their first initials and last name engraved on the back.
No I was not invited. I had several ladies here ask me if I was going & I just laughed and said they didn't invite me this was the real deal :)
Joel had a good time and what a fun experience!!!

Our church had their 49th Anniversary this past Sunday. After services we all had lunch together. At least once a month we ask everyone to bring a main dish and a side dish so that there is enough food for everyone plus visitors. It's nice to just sit and enjoy a good meal and socialize with people from the church that we don't get time to chat with. I made the cakes which were stinkers. Sheet cakes are super easy to do unless you dont like to write which I dont. My handwriting isn't even that nice so writing on a cake with giggly icing it is even harder. I did the blue cake first which was a chocolate cake and let me just say one oops with yellow icing on top of white is pure torture. I had to wipe it off and do it over again. UH Craziness. I wasn't completely happy with the center but a cake like that just isn't going to be perfect.
I went into a store the other day to check out how they did their sheet cakes and I figured out their secret. The fill it with globs of icing so you can't tell whether they've made a mistake on the cake or not. Not a bad idea :)

The yellow cake was a nice white cake made from scratch. The chocolate cake I actually used a box mix but added other ingredients to it so half scratch :).
I really have been enjoying working with cakes. My goal is to continue making cakes whether its as a gift or an order. Of course I prefer orders :) who wouldn't. I'm looking forward to doing something a little more creative next time. Sheet cakes are fun but really too simple, there's not a lot of excitement in them or challenge. A little challenge on a cake is always good!

New Adventures & Big News!

I do apologize to my faithful blog readers for not posting anything for quite some time. It's been a little challenging for a few reason which I will get to in a minute.
What a whirlwind of a year. I was pretty excited when Joel told me that he was done with classes and he could focus on his research. For some odd reason that went in my head as more me time :) well not so much. The only chance I have to get some Joel and I time is to agree to meet him on the farm and help him to some surveying which I seem to be good at cause he keeps asking me to come back & help. The big plus for me was this past week when Joel asked me to drive the bobcat and load the gravel or "soil" (I still have trouble with that one- to me soil is dirt that I put in my flower beds, rocks are gravel but he's the civil engineer. Pretty soon though I'll be getting a PHD in this if I keep helping :) )
Anyway, riding the bobcat is my absolute favorite unless Joel ask me to drive it in a spot where I know it is more likely to tip. If any one has driven one of those and it has tipped on you, you understand the heart pounding panic that you get while you make a split decision of where to move it next. There's nothing more fun that getting to load and unload the soil in different spots and driving that little thing. OK OK so I'm rambling at this point but only to tease a little bit.
On to the part about the new adventure you say, OH YES, Joel and I are going to have a baby! This is mainly why I haven't blogged very much because I knew I'd spill the beans before we should. Something this exciting is hard to keep to yourself for more than a day :)
Joel and I found this Christian agency in Tenn. that gave people the opportunity to adopt embryos so that they would also have a chance at life. Back in March Joel and I traveled to Knoxville Tenn. to complete an embryo transfer. Several weeks later we found out that it was successful and that I was pregnant. I cannot even begin to tell you how ecstatic we were.
As of this Friday I will be 9 weeks pregnant and our due date is Dec. 3rd!

Spring?

This week has been a strange one for spring. I have all red tulips in the front flower bed and on the side of the house we have red and yellow. The yellow tulips took a little longer to bloom but they're just as pretty.
I am having a hard time not planting the rest of my bulbs or buying new flowers, but I'm constantly reminded that our cold weather is not over yet and I really need to wait until May to plant anything. Today is a chilly day and very windy and it sounds like we're going to get a freeze tonight. Go figure!
Joel and I were hoping to go fishing this weekend but he's been so insanely busy with his project and other things that we decided we were going to be lazy on Sat. and do nothing. ok maybe we'll get a coffee and a cinnamon crunch bagel in the morning and then do nothing :)

Spring is here!

Wow, I feel like it's been forever since I posted something. Joel and I have been really busy lately. My parents came down towards the end of March and we got a chance to drive to the farm to see Joel's progress on his project. I cant resist a good horse picture which we had to take off the side of the road. We celebrated dads birthday. I made him a fun cake that he had seen in a magazine that was supposed to look like a watermelon. Ok no it didnt really look like a watermelon but it did taste good. :)

Spring is finally here and my flowers are just starting to bloom. I love my plants!

This one is from our new tree in the backyard that we planted. It just started to bloom yesterday!
Oh I wish I could tape a recording of the cows this morning! I'm sitting upstairs in the office with the window open and it sounds like all of the cows are lined up having a major conversation. It's absolutly halarious. At one point I heard a very unusual high pitch which I decided was a calves attempt to get in on the conversation. They are so funny!
